Not to pile on, but I suspect the New Yorker app needs to be redesigned and rewritten from scratch. Even today, issues are absurdly huge--more than 100MB--and need to be downloaded manually one by one. Multiple downloads can't occur at once, and downloads won't complete in the background. Downloading issues is _work_, and if you aren't on a fast enough Internet connection you should be prepared to keep tapping the iPad to keep it from going to sleep (inexplicably pausing the download yet again). Once you do download an issue, navigation is Byzantine and page turning doesn't respond as smoothly to touch as one would expect. While there may not be more advertising than in the print magazine, it feels much more prominent and in your face. Pinch to zoom does not work. While I appreciate the fact that it is possible to read the New Yorker on the iPad, this application does not do justice to the quality of the writing in the magazine itself. For a good example of how a magazine application _should_ be designed, I recommend following the example of The Magazine.
So much better now
I was one of the many frustrated users of the New Yorker app on the iPad, and even started a discussion on the apple support boards to find help from fellow readers, many of whom were experiencing similar problems. I am happy to report that the 3.7 update released on Nov. 18th has solved for me all the problems that the application had. It downloads automatically as advertised in the newsstand folder and everything runs smoothly when reading an issue. I hope that everybody is having the same experience! The New Yorker iPad app is finally worth 5 stars!
