So far I have been playing the game and love it so far. gives it a classic rpg look and feeling.
Simplistic, slow, and no help in a pinch
Simplistic game, even compared to very old Ultima titles. Never really felt excited or deeply interested. Quit at mines where Wretches were hiding out when both paths into the mines were blocked by gates and I couldn't find any hints online to get me started again. It seems when I moved my computer up to a Mac from a PC, almost everything improved but the games. Mac games are pitiful. I really can't recommend spending the money on this one.
Great game so far
I used to play all the old RPGs (e.g. Telengard, Sword of Fargoal, Bards Tale, Ultima 1-4, etc.) and wanted a game in that genre so I looked at what was available. Avadon seemed like the best fit and it received great reviews on game rating sites so I thought I'd give it a shot. Bottom line, THIS GAME ROCKS. Great gameplay, low system requirements, interesting storyline, and lots of stuff to do. Should keep me busy for quite some time and I hope there are sequels to this storyline.
Has an old-school feel, but wasn't a fan
I am a fan of old-school RPGs, and I've heard a lot of good things about Spiderweb Software, so I was eager to give this a shot. It isn't terrible, but isn't great: in my mind, it emulates a lot of the fondly-remembered but rather mediocre RPGs of the past. I loved those games, but even indie games have come a long way since then. The engine seems good, and the are graphics true to the style they're trying to emulate. Where the game lost me was the text: both the display of it and the writing. By display, I mean the font, lack of contrast against the screen, size and amount of text all combined to make the game too much of a pain in the neck (literally!) to read. And this is coming from a huge fan of text adventures and interactive fiction--I don't mind reading, I do mind eyestrain. As far as the writing goes… it just wasn't my style. Plot points seem arbitrary and too contrived, and I don't really care much about the characters. Too many plot elements come suddenly, from out of nowhere. Others seem to like the game, but I would prefer a tighter story with better writing and better characters. Yes, I really did love many of the older RPGs that had similar flaws… but with so many other excellent indie offerings, I expect better from a game.
I love this game!
I've been a huge fan of Spiderweb Software's offerings for years! I'm so glad they have this available here! A great in depth game. My only gripe is that I wish the text were slightly larger. Other than that, this is a fantastic game, highly recomended!
