Good for tourists
Tried it out for 2 minutes and already saw flaws in the Chinese. Some tones are wrong or mislabeled in some phrases, although this will not really pose a major issue for someone just trying to be able to get around China, they might be the cause of some criticism if you're being taught to have perfect pronunciation.
OKAY Basic Sentences for Travel
I've been studying Chinese for 7 years (off and on), have many hardcopy books, and have many iPhone apps. This app has multiple "phrase books" which you purchase. None of them appear useful to me except the "travel essentials". For example, I don't care about entertainment, but I'm sure other people do. The Travel Essentials can be upgraded for 1.99, which I believe is worth it. The app provides good native speaking which is always useful. It also has a nice pinyin pronunciation guide. However, there's a few things that are not very useful and are also confusing. When you select a phrase, there's a button to hear a native speaker (good); but there's another button that says "show". This divides the pane vertically and you can scroll through a series of words and phrases that only show Chinese characters and English translation. PINYIN is needed here, also, so unless you already know Chinese characters, this whole are is not useful to you. Also, the "listen" button stays "enabled" when you scroll through these other words and phrases. You might suspect that if you tapped the listen button you would hear the phrase you select, but you don't. You always only hear the original phrase that you selected before pressing the "show" button. I know this sounds a bit confusing, but it IS confusing. If more phrase dictionaries were included (useful ones!), and if pinyin and speech were provided everywhere in the app along with Chinese characters, this app would be 5+ stars. As it is with its limitations, only three star, perhaps even 2 star.

Misses some key things
Overall reasonably impressed with the interface. However even after paying for the full 'Travel Essentials' phrasebook ($1.99) -I can say 'I'm 13 years old' (I'm 43), but still can't get essentials such as 'yes', 'no', 'please' and 'thank-you' and numbers (other than 13) 'Hello' 'Goodbye'... I'd say those would be travel essentials -wouldn't you?

Fix the audio!
The audio on this is extremely cheap. You can hear noises like mouse clicks and background noises. If you record it in a quiet place or in a studio it would sound great! Other than the audio it is very cool! 中文. 타일러.Тайлер.タイラ。
